ULTIMATE CAMO FLEECE

I want to take a minute to talk about what has been my warmest and most comfortable hunting season to date...
This season, as soon as the weather turned cold I started wearing my new fleece gear. I had already been wearing Ultimate Camo for the past three seasons so the outstanding color and camo pattern were nothing new and in fact could be even deeper. The feel of this fleece however, was a welcome surprise....I am currently wearing a full set of fleece...I really dont have to layer to much as the lined fleece is plenty warm!!! It is awesome being able to take my pants off after a wet hunt without having to remove my boots and get my feet wet (These pants have zippers on the legs up to the knee)
Both the zip up jacket and the pants are 300g Micro Fleece.....and are lined with 300g Micro Fleece...so that equals warm!!!
Throw in some hand warmers and I can sit toasty all day long which I did on back to back Saturdays with CJ and Roger who were wearing exactly the same digz.....
The addition of this fantastic fleece outerwear at a ridiculously low price takes an already awesome camo pattern over the top!!!
Here are a few pics of fleece success!!!

LIVE from My Blind......Its go time

Its live hunt time again...
Dawson and I did a trial run last weekend and it went off pretty good...
We passed a little 5 point and chatted with a few people...had a shooter in sight when we got boogered up by a rogue house cat!!!

The 5 point wont be so lucky this weekend as it is my last hunt for the season with a buck tag in my pocket!!!
Here are some pics of the set up and the deer we could encounter at this spot...

Scent Control

I know this subject has been beaten half to death...But I also know that any tip that can increase your odds when it comes to Whitetails can make a huge difference. Now I can only speak for myself but for the most part, give or take a few parts of this sequence I am about to share with you all of the Overkill Guys are on the same page when it comes to controlling odor. I will be mentioning some different products by name but we are not affiliated with any scent control company at this time.

The whole process begins well before hunting season starts. I keep all my clothing year round in rubbermaid bins or hangers in a cedar lined closet in the man cave...A few weeks prior to the season, I wash all of my clothes in an odor eliminating soap. Im not a big fan of masking odor, but rather killing it so I like to use Scent Killer or one of the new Primos brand washes with Silver. I have also used baking soda as an effective wash. Once the wash is done, I then dry the clothing either on a line outside in the back yard or tumble dry with an odor free dryer sheet. I sometimes use a dirt scented dryer sheet but I don't like to go to heavy on artificial odors.

When the wash and dry is complete.....I take all the clothing and group it into a full hunts outfit and place it directly into a
"green bag" This includes everything from socks, gloves, mask, long johns, pants, shirt, jacket, and my "drive to the field wear" I have a couple bags and a couple outfits of clothing that I can use for a few different hunts. Any remaining clothing is placed in a rubbermaid container until I need it.

Along with my clothing, I also try and minimize the odor from my person. I never wear cologne....Much to the chagrin of my Wife....She always wants me to "smell yummy" but I will not from August 'til February....And not during turkey season for that matter because if a deer busts me while Im hunting birds they could spook the Turkeys...hehe
I do not allow smoking in my house or vehicle...I don't care who you are!
And finally I shower in a scent free soap.

I will again point to the newer scent free soaps that contain silver ion. I wash my body and hair (which I also keep short for less scent) with the liquid soap every morning I hunt.....It kinda stinks that I cant take another shower before a quick hunt after work but thats the breaks...On evenings like that I use a scent eliminating wipe if I'm sweaty and smelly. I also use a scent free deodorant. The only problem with hunters branded deodorants is that I have found they do not last as long. I have tried a few kinds of scent free everyday consumer sticks as well.

After the shower is complete I jump into my ride to clothes. I am a big fan of throwing a pair of Adidas work out pants on over my LJs and a T or sweat shirt that I can either change out of or leave on. They have been treated and shoved in my green bag as well. I always try to get gas and snacks before hand so I don't have to stop on the way to the field...I definitely will not be wearing my hunting boots anyway but I don't want the smell on my fingers from the pumps. I do need coffee so I stop at Dunkin' Donuts as they have a drive through and I don't have to go inside.

Once to location I complete the final step in my process. The spray down. I have used about every product available over the last 25 years and can really not single out a sure winner. I am going to again lean on the new Silver XP from Primos as everything I have read regarding the silver ion is pretty telling when you get down to it.

None of the guys on the team use any Scent Blocking type carbon clothing as a rule....They may own some but I don't believe anyone of they guys is sold on it. I have worn some of the Medalist gear with the Silver Fiber as an under layer.

I guess to sum it all up...1. We stink! 2. Deer have an acute sense of smell... 3.Do whatever is necessary to beat a bucks nose!
In the course of writing this I discovered that apparently I am a big fan of Silver?! hehe

Hope this can help somebody...any tips or tricks you may have I would love to hear as I always love to check out other peoples methods.

Just in from Bob

I took this six pointer when he ran off a field following a bunch of does. I had about half a second to shoot. One shot and he hit the ground at about 60 yards. When we took him to the butcher, a fresh broadhead was discovered buried in his shoulder. The deer dressed out at about 150 pounds and was perfect to donate to FHFH.

Its been a frustrating couple of weeks for Jeff...Limited Time to hunt...and it seemed that every chance he got.....an odd occurrence would sway the outcome of his hunts.....From leaf blowers to lawnmowers....soccer playing teens to dog walkers....cows and shed builders....bad weather....you name it.............But this morning that all changed.........

I knew this buck was in trouble when Jeff called the other day and said he saw a solid Buck near his stand at 'Wimbledon"
The deer was up to the same business that got my freak deer in trouble........cruising the gauntlet for honeys near the tennis courts.....

He figured this morning would be our best bet as the bucks seem to check this backyard every morning on the way back from their night time haunts......

This morning was no different...We saw a ton of smaller bucks cruising and chasing...3 times Jeff smashed the Ginourmous rattling antlers and 3 times bucks came running....The last time brought the two biggest of the morning with this guy being the aggressor...He paid the price for Jeff's Frustration and piled up within 45 yards......

Congrats Jeff!!! I was so pumped to film you shooting another one...

The chili dog cost us........

Way to go Bob!!! just had to stop for a hotdog....hehehe we were kinda just chillin and not in a hurry due to the notoriously late arrivals of deer at the Germans....We prob. would have busted this guy but it is just funny knowing...the buck was in front of the cam for a good ten minutes and left about five minutes before we strolled in...It took us a good fifteen to dress into our camos in the boxwood hideout and this is what we missed....Oh well....

Roger Smokes his first Md. Buck!!!

Congrats Roger on his first Md. Buck...He smoked the buck through his ticker and it piled up in nearly the same spot as Kevins Buck from a few weeks ago....I also gotta give a big shout out to Kevin...He gets the award for most improved camera man!!! He got flawless footage of the buck before the shot...captured a great shot and even panned out and got the deer running and falling!!! What an event!!! Way to go Boyz!!!

Big Ole 6

I passed him when he gave it to me the first time and just shot him with the still camera....but with all the chasin' and gruntin' and growlin' I just could not contain myself....after the freak, I am satisfied shooting 2 4 yr. old deer in one season...I guess now I will be doing alot more behind the cam but look out deer during firearms...the bow will be back out...

German Stand produces yet another...

The tree has been this seasons revolving door...I took My buddy Joe that I have worked with for 20 plus years to the Germans....We have hunted together a couple times but never tried the video thing....Had a fun evening and a little rut action to top it off.....Joe made a great shot on this little critter for his first video kill!!!

Thought these were neat pics....Spotted 3 point?

Never have I seen an antlered buck with spots.....

Hinky filmed Kevin shooting "The Big 9"
Plenty of does were around feeding in the yard and that was too much for this guy to handle....he blasted out of the cover behind the guys with his neck extended scent checking and moved in to the yard in search of love....that was a bad decision....love was sitting in Kevins shooting lane...Kevin put his signature heart shot on this big boy for his 3rd and best video buck to date!!! Hinky got some quick but fantastic footage that includes the buck wobbling and falling no more than forty yards away!!!

The Freaks come out.....In the morning?

We had some cool history with this deer..."The Freak" spent his days in a spot we call Wimbledon...(the stand is located between 3 tennis courts) Last season we were positive the deer was at least 4 years old and he was shot at by someone who shall remain nameless but rhymes with Jeff......After that miss we saw the buck repeatedly and tried to arrow him a few times....One day Jeff and I were in the stand and said we would not shoot him as we had each taken a buck and did not want to burn a tag on him.....He gave us a fantastic show and we could have smoked him a dozen times....The next time we hunted there we said he was on the list as it was gun season and we could use a tag on him.....stayed out of range the whole morning....We knew he would be a cool looking freak again and the added bonus of another big buck gave Jeff and I a reason to be in there this morning.....He came in like he owned the place like he always did and stayed in the woods behind the house....we saw quite a few bucks cross paths with him and he was his normal grumpy aggresive self fending off all the younger bucks that were feeding near him....The oldest other buck in the group was a 100 inch 7 point....he would get the closest to the freak and irritated him the most...he actually scraped and ran a few does around as the big boy fed....Finally the freak started our way and came right under us at about ten yards where I skewered his heart...The rage was devastating...I have rarely seen that much trauma with a slug wound! In behind the shoulder, through the ticker, and in to the opposite leg makes quite a noise at 10 yds. Long bloody trail and a heavy drag!!!! Jeff, I cant thank you enough....You are obviously holding the Overkill horseshoe having been behind the camera for all this years bucks so far and we all owe you in the rut!!! Andy....I have a complaint........Its really hard to see me in my pictures with your camo on?!? hehehe...
